"Can a public theater still be inclusive, accommodating the classic and the serendipitous, the highbrow and the masses, the artistic and the social—a place for the creative life of all?"
After a decade of design and construction, and even forced to shut down due to the bankruptcy of the contractor, the Taipei Performing Arts Center was finally completed by the OMA team and is expected to officially open in August. TPAC in Shilin is located in the bustling streets and various snack bars. TPAC is so abruptly and not so abruptly integrated with the surrounding landscape.
The central building cube of TPAC connects the three stages, backstage, and other application spaces. The circular sphere is the Globe Playhouse, which can accommodate 800 spectators. It is like a planet parked in this perfect location. The Grand Theater consists of an asymmetrical space with a capacity of 1,500 spectators, opposite the 800-seat Blue Box for more experimental performances. These spaces can be combined with each other to become a huge Super Theater space full of performance potential, which is believed to bring a different viewing experience.
In the future, it is expected that through this space, different sparks can be created from drama, and it will also provide an opportunity for urbanites to experience creation in their daily life.
