A Day in Da Studio x Or Studio

JT: How did riso become one of the members of Or Studio?

Jo: Riso came to the Studio because Kate came across the riso print studios in London when she lived there, and thought, “this is cool, maybe we should get one for our studio”. We researched Riso printers and decided it was a good idea to get one.

Kate: There are a lot of design studios in Dublin, and there is a thriving design scene here. We were thinking about how we position ourselves in among these studios. We were inspired by studios in other cities that also have riso printers, and we considered it a nice way to find a unique spot in the design scene in Dublin. We share the printer with other

designers and illustrators, and we got to know a lot of people. We connect with the design community through offering the printer as a service.

Jo: The way the studio was formed has been quite organic.

Kate: It’s a space for experimenting, in terms of even just being more in control of the type of jobs we take on, and the way that we work.

We’re not necessarily trying to sell anything. For us, it is a more organic thing, whereby we will create work we enjoy creating, and if people come across our work and like what we do, then we will be really happy to collaborate with them. We enjoy working in this way.

JT: Were you both graphic designers before Or studio?

Jo: Yes. We both met while studying Graphic Design in University, and worked in graphic design jobs. I ended up working a little bit more in web design, but I got to a stage of not really enjoying it and wanted to get back into the print side of design, so when the opportunity came to start the studio, it was good timing for me.

JT: But web and print… web feels like the opposite media of design, isn’t it? Have you encountered any conflicts in any aspects after you started Or studio?

Jo: Not really. I kind of just ditched it. (laughters). We wanted to start Or Studio from scratch for both of us.

Kate: We find that using the printer helps us to create a new output that is not too heavily influenced by either one of us, but creates a new visual output through the printer, which becomes the studio output rather than being either Jo’s or Kate’s specifically.

JT: What does the riso printer act as in your lives, individually or for Or studio as a whole?

Kate: We both teach design in universities in Dublin, and Riso plays a part in how we teach design. We also use the Riso to do workshops, where we bring the printer to various spaces around the country. We are also part of the Design West team, Design West is a two-week design summer school in the west of Ireland. We bring the printer there, and help the students create work using the printer. We have found that while we are teaching people how to create with the printer, we are learning how other people might approach these new things and we learn from them.

Jo: When we run workshops, students often bring fresh ideas. And maybe they suggest a unique approach to using it in a way that we’ve never tried to do before, which encourages us to keep experimenting and pushing the printer in new ways.

JT: What is your favorite project?

Jo: We were asked to go to Science gallery in Dublin for a week to do workshops as a part of the exhibition that was on there at the time. It was a very enjoyable project. We got to take over space: we could design a space and we could basically create our own event. We were tasked with naming the event, designing promotional material and curating the space. The space transformed throughout the week as work produced was continuously displayed on rotation, co-creating an evolving exhibition with members of the public.

Kate: It was also really exciting for us because the Science Gallery attracts a lot of people from all walks of life, not just those interested in design. People participating in the workshops were not always used to how we might approach design, but in the end they made these amazing zines, and the fact that they could walk in off the street, and create a little book in this small time frame was quite cool.

Jo: Using the printer to work with the community through the workshops is always very rewarding and a lot of fun.
